Essentials for a Basic Skincare Routine

While some people can get by with just a splash of water on their face once a day (Seriously? What is up with that), others actually have to work to maintain clear skin.

The truth about acne is that it’s completely natural, and it does happen. There are, however, ways to control it and achieve the clear skin of your dreams.

Are you interested in starting a devoted skincare routine, but have nowhere to start? Here are a few essentials to starting a basic skincare routine (that will spiral into an elaborate process if you’re anything like me).

1. Cleanser

Choosing a cleanser can be a very daunting task, because there are so many options available on the market. In my experience, the best cleansers are those that don’t come with a million other promises.

For example, I tend to ditch the cleansers that claim to clean my skin, get rid of my acne, brighten my dark marks, prevent diabetes, etc. (You’re on my face for, what, 4 minutes of the day MAX. How is this possible?).

The best cleansers are those without harsh fragrances and too many additives, and those that provide your face with a gentle wash.


2. Toner/Exfoliate

Now here’s where we can afford to get a little rough, but not too rough. Too much exfoliation will actually make your skin worse and will likely cause more acne, so you have to be careful when picking your products.

My preferred product is either Salicylic Acid or Witch Hazel, both of which are excellent a fighting acne. (Tip: Witch Hazel tends to dry out my skin in the winter months, so I tend to stick to Salicylic Acid when temperatures drop)

Start applying this product only once a day to see how your skin handles it. As I said, too much exfoliation can leave you with worse skin than you started with!

3. Moisturizer

Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize.

I used to have incredibly oily skin and would run at the sight of any moisture ( Flashback to “My skin is already oily enough, why would I add more?” ).

Then I learned that my skin had been producing excess oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. Isn’t the body fun? I started incorporating a moisturizer into my daily routine and my skin went from oily to normal/combination. Seriously. Moisturize.

4. Sunscreen


Once again, I used to think that I didn’t need this. Why? Because I have dark skin. Because I’ve never had a sunburn. Because I was told that melanin acted as a natural protectant.

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t.

True, the sun is what keeps us alive, but too much exposure is incredibly harmful to your skin, regardless of skin type or color.

A good sunscreen can be difficult to find, especially for people of color, because many with the right protectants (I recommend at least SPF 50+) can leave a white cast. I recommend using a sunscreen that’s designed for skincare. Neutrogena Clear Face is a great option.
